Health Care
List of suggested health care items to bring:
  • High UV sunscreen - although you can buy good sunscreens here they are relatively expensive
  • Vitamins and homeopathic remedies are expensive and not readily available
  • Specific medications - i.e. Genestra
  • Glasses/prescriptions
  • Certain women’s sanitary products and brands are available but you may wish to bring your own preferred items.
  • I haven’t found an eye doctor here yet. We get our eyes checked and purchase glasses in the US.

There is inconsistent information regarding purchase of the contraceptive pill. You can currently buy the pill over the counter in many pharmacies;
however, there is concern that this may not continue to be the case for single women. It can be prescribed for ‘medical’ reasons i.e. acne, heavy, painful flow, etc. Therefore, it is recommended you bring into the country what you require. Be aware that certain medications are illegal – specifically those containing codeine. For specific medications that you bring with you, you should have a signed letter from your doctor at home stating the medication required.

  • NyQuil & Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine – unavailable in Dubai
  • You can get contact solution & tampons very easily from many different stores.
  • Over the counter and prescription sleep medications are also not allowed or available for purchase so bring them but be advised they are illegal as far as I understand (I bring a bottle of Tylenol PM with me, of course at my own risk).
Doctors/Hospitals - coverage depends on the nature of the injury (how you were injured). There is a section in our insurance that outlines the activities that are not covered - see below for the "Hazardous/Professional Sports" section for more clarification. All work-related injuries will be covered (i.e. after school activities, Week Without Walls trip). If the clinic/hospital accepts our insurance, you will pay the first 50 dhs and then the rest is covered by the insurance. If you go to a hospital or clinic outside of the network you will need to pay upfront and then submit a claim form. If possible, be sure to communicate with the insurance provider before you go to a hospital/clinic that is outside of the network.

  • If you were taking part in any of the activities outlined in the "Hazardous/Professional Sports" section when you were injured, you will not be covered whatsoever. Talk to other teachers who have experienced this in order to determine the best course of action.

Dental - coverage depends on the level of insurance you receive. For North American hires it includes coverage up to 2,000 AED with 20% co-insurance (reimbursement only). This coverage is only good for routine dental examinations and cleanings for twice a year. Orthodontists are not covered and can be quite expensive.
